Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation is seeking a motivated and dynamic individual to join our kitchen team as a Cook. This is an essential role in ensuring that patients and staff receive nutritious, well-prepared, and satisfying meals every day at one of Guyana’s leading healthcare facilities.

Position Overview

As a Cook at Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, you will be responsible for preparing and cooking meals for patients and staff on a large scale. This role requires culinary skill, attention to detail, and a strong commitment to food safety and quality within a busy hospital kitchen environment.

Key Responsibilities

Food Preparation & Cooking

  • Prepare and cook a variety of meals for patients and staff
  • Follow recipes and cooking standards to ensure consistency and quality
  • Cook meals in large quantities to meet the hospital’s daily needs
  • Ensure all dishes are prepared to the highest standard
  • Assist with menu planning and seasonal adjustments

Dietary & Nutritional Compliance

  • Prepare meals in accordance with specific dietary and nutritional requirements
  • Work closely with dieticians and nutritionists to meet patient needs
  • Ensure patients with special dietary plans receive appropriate meals
  • Maintain awareness of food allergies and medical dietary restrictions

Food Safety & Hygiene

  • Maintain strict food safety and hygiene standards throughout the kitchen
  • Follow proper food handling, storage, and preparation procedures
  • Monitor food temperatures and expiration dates
  • Ensure the kitchen environment is clean and well-organized at all times
  • Comply with health and safety regulations

Kitchen Operations

  • Participate in the daily operations of the hospital kitchen
  • Assist with cleaning and maintaining kitchen equipment
  • Support inventory management and restocking of food supplies
  • Work as a team to ensure smooth and efficient kitchen operations
  • Help with the serving and distribution of meals when required

Requirements

Education & Training

Option 1:

  • Completion of a catering course at a recognized institution
    • Six (6) months full-time, OR
    • One (1) year part-time

Option 2:

  • A full secondary school education
  • Plus a minimum of one (1) year of cooking experience in a large-scale catering establishment (preferred)

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong culinary skills and experience in cooking
  • Knowledge of food safety and hygiene practices
  • Ability to cook on a large scale
  • Good teamwork and collaboration skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced kitchen environment
  • Reliable and punctual
  • Attention to detail and consistency
  • Physical fitness to handle kitchen tasks
  • Willingness to learn and grow
  • Good communication skills

Preferred Experience

  • Previous experience working in a hospital or institutional kitchen would be an asset
  • Familiarity with large-scale meal preparation and catering preferred
