The Guyana Gold Board invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced persons to fill the vacant position of Head of Laboratory at our Head Office. This is a senior leadership opportunity for an experienced laboratory professional to lead critical operations in Guyana’s gold sector.

Position Overview

The Head of Laboratory will lead and coordinate laboratory operations across the Guyana Gold Board, ensuring excellence in testing, evaluation, and pricing of gold while maintaining compliance with the Guyana Gold Board Act.

Key Responsibilities

Laboratory Operations Management

  • Coordinate and oversee all laboratory operations at Head Office
  • Oversee laboratory operations at the Guyana Gold Board’s Branch Offices
  • Ensure systems related to testing, evaluation, and pricing of gold are consistently aligned with policies and procedures outlined in the Guyana Gold Board Act
  • Assure clients of reliable and accurate laboratory services

Efficiency & Optimization

  • Ensure the Laboratory operates at an optimal level of efficiency
  • Manage human resource allocation and development within the laboratory
  • Optimize technical operations and laboratory workflows
  • Implement quality control and quality assurance measures

Policy Implementation & Compliance

  • Manage the implementation of the Board’s policies and programmes relating to the purchase and sale of gold
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements
  • Maintain laboratory standards and best practices
  • Develop and update laboratory procedures as needed

Equipment & Technical Management

  • Oversee laboratory equipment maintenance and calibration
  • Repair, replace, and procure laboratory equipment as required
  • Ensure technical resources meet operational needs
  • Apply engineering concepts to laboratory operations

Leadership & Strategy

  • Provide strategic direction for laboratory operations
  • Lead and develop laboratory staff
  • Collaborate with other departments and stakeholders
  • Prepare reports and recommendations for senior management

Qualifications and Experience

Essential Requirements

Education:

  • A First Degree in a science-related field from a recognized university

Experience:

  • A minimum of five (5) years of senior management experience within a laboratory setting

Technical Competencies:

  1. Demonstrated theoretical and practical knowledge of basic engineering concepts, including the ability to repair, replace, and procure laboratory equipment
  2. Training in Management Information Systems
  3. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite

  • Strong leadership and team management abilities
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills
  • Knowledge of laboratory quality systems and standards
  • Understanding of gold testing and evaluation processes
  • Strategic thinking and problem-solving capabilities
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to manage multiple laboratory locations
